College of Santa Fe Celebrates 150th Anniversary

Receives Final Approval for Change of Control from Higher Learning Commission

With its original charter dating to 1859, the College of Santa Fe marks its 150th anniversary this year. The college is the oldest university in the state of New Mexico and has been an important part of Santa Fe's and New Mexico’s education landscape for generations of students. It offers undergraduate degrees in a wide range of creative art and design programs, including fine arts, graphic design, theatre, photography, creative writing, moving image arts (film making), music and undergraduate and graduate programs in business and education. The College of Santa Fe was recently ranked among the best colleges in the Western Region by US News & World Report.

In recognition of the college's historic anniversary, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson stated: "For 150 years, the College of Santa Fe has been a symbol of excellence. New Mexico is proud to be home to one of the west's premier fine and liberal arts campuses, with renowned programs in film and theater. As a proud supporter of the college, I look forward to the contributions of this state treasure over the next 150 years."

According to Larry Hinz, president of the College of Santa Fe, "We respect the long and deep history of the college and recognize the contributions of our alumni in the local community and those alumni working nationally and globally in the fields of creative arts and film. Additionally, we appreciate the recent action of the college's regional accreditor, the Higher Learning Commission, in approving the college's change of control application and continuing the accreditation of the college."

In September 2009, the College of Santa Fe joined Laureate International Universities,a global network of 45 accredited universities in over 20 countries.
